Falls as anomalies? An experimental evaluation using smartphone accelerometer data
نویسندگان
چکیده
Life expectancy keeps growing and, among elderly people, accidental falls occur frequently. A system able to promptly detect falls would help in reducing the injuries that a fall could cause. Such a system should meet the needs of the people to which is designed, so that it is actually used. In particular, the system should be minimally invasive and inexpensive. Thanks to the fact that most of the smartphones embed accelerometers and powerful processing unit, they are good candidates both as data acquisition devices and as platforms to host fall detection systems. For this reason, in the last years several fall detection methods have been experimented on smartphone accelerometer data. Most of them have been tuned with simulated falls because, to date, datasets of real-world falls are not available. This article evaluates the effectiveness of methods that detect falls as anomalies. To this end, we compared traditional approaches with anomaly detectors. In particular, we experienced the kNN and the SVM methods using both the one-class and two-classes configurations. The comparison involved three different collections of accelerometer data, and four different data representations. Empirical results demonstrated that, in most of the cases, falls are not required to design an effective fall detector.

A Smartphone-based Gait Data Collection System for the Prediction of Falls in Elderly Adults
Falls prevention efforts for older adults have become increasingly important and are now a significant research effort. As part of the prevention effort, analysis of gait has become increasingly important. Data is typically collected in a laboratory setting using 3-D motion capture, which can be time consuming, invasive and requires expensive and specialized equipment as well as trained operato...
متن کاملUsing the Smartphone Accelerometer to Monitor Fall Risk while Playing a Game: The Design and Usability Evaluation of Dance! Don't Fall
Falls are dangerous, and unfortunately common for older adults. Dance! Don’t Fall is a game that assesses the quality of the user’s locomotion based on data from the accelerometer of a smartphone. By providing a form of exercise, the game may actually reduce fall risk as well as monitoring it. In this paper, we document the development of the prototype and a usability study with ten seniors tha...
متن کاملFall Detection with Three-Axis Accelerometer and Magnetometer in a Smartphone
As an aging society approaches, the issue of injuries from falls by the elderly has emerged anew. Because of the dangers involved, research has recently been conducted on various types of falls; in particular, considerable research has been carried out on the detection and prevention of falls. We design an algorithm for the detection of falls using smartphones equipped with three-axis accelerom...

In the next coming years, many of our basic activities such as reading an e-mail, checking our bank account, buying on-line, etc., will be performed by using a smartphone in a mobile environment. It is quite obvious that the degree of security granted by a classic username-password access is not sufficient and that a stronger level of safeness is required. However, usually adopted additional in...

This paper presents a study on identifying different individuals using accelerometer data from a smartphone presented on their walking patterns. The identifier algorithm was trained and evaluated in an experiment with twenty human subjects including 12 males and 8 females in real-world conditions. Various classifiers were tested using descriptive statistical features. Our model recognizes patte...
